DEFLAMO: Apyrum Makes Nylon Unburnable
Sollentuna den 27:e mars 2009
DEFLAMO AB(publ) has developed a new variation of Apyrum that exhibits very good flame retardant properties when combined with polyamide (nylon). The result enables entry into a very important flame retardant market for DEFLAMO.
The new Apyrum variation is a result of developmental work between DEFLAMO and a number of other companies involved in the development of polymer. This cooperation has resulted in the production of a new variation of Apyrum aimed for thermoplastics. Apyrum XP 1002.05 was produced using a completely new process developed by DEFLAMO for the production of Apyrum products in dry form. In this case, the result was an Apyrum salt that was not easily soluble, had good flame retardation properties, and seemed to coagulate well in the melted plastic, which counteracted dripping when the plastic burned.
"Our newly developed variation of Apyrum exhibited those flame retardation properties that were demanded and had only marginal negative effects on the physical properties of the materials into which it was integrated," states Fredrik Westin.
Apyrum can be a good alternative for many flame-retarded polyamides. Today, polyamides are mostly flame-retarded using bromide, antimony, magnesium hydroxide, and red phosphate.
"Because of this, there is a strong driving force within the industry and marketplace to replace these substances with alternatives that are more environmentally friendly. We have a competitive advantage over such flame retardants, both environmentally as well as economically," continues Fredrik Westin.
"Another advantage with the new Apyrum XP 1002.05 is that production costs can be reduced. The manufacturing technique is applicable for all variations of Apyrum in powder form for use in plastic for example," concludes Fredrik Westin.
Approximately one million tons of polyamide are used in Europe annually. Polyamide is used in the manufacturing of automobiles, electrical appliances, and many other consumer products, and a significant amount of the polyamide used in these products is flame retarded.
About DEFLAMO:
DEFLAMO develops, manufactures, and markets an environmentally-friendly flame retardant that mimics the human body's way to conserve energy and heat. Today, we work together with more than 60 multinational industrial companies from many different sectors such as plastic, chemicals, paper, wood, transport etc. in the development of new applications for the consumer and industry. Our product, Apyrum, will be able to replace dangerous flame retardants containing, for example, bromide, chlorine, antimony, and phosphate esters with substances that are part of the metabolic system of the human body, and which are classified as food additives.
DEFLAMO is on the brink of a major industrial breakthrough and is in the process of increasing its production capacity and continues to build up it's sales organization.
